I'm still on a Runner's High after this special race. This marks the third year in a row that I've completed a Half Marathon on the first Saturday of January. I believe this is a tradition I would like to continue for as long as I can. The New Year's Race Los Angeles 2013 was different than most since the race began at 9pm. To actually run along the streets in Downtown LA was such a thrill. Four to five miles of this race took place running through, in and around Dodgers Stadium. Like any California race, this one had it's share of hills, hills and hills! Thanks to Core training, I didn't have problems when the hills. I'm stiill getting over a heel injury and I didn't want to push myself too hard. By Mile 4, I knew that I was far behind my usual pace so I shifted to lower gears and enjoyed the race. I took many pics along the route and enjoyed this night race.
The chilly weather threw me for a loop! I wasn't expecting it to be so cold. I thought I drank enough water but felt cramps in my calves two hundred yards from the Finish Line. I had to stop for a moment to gather composure and just suck in the pain so I could end the race on a good note.
I didn't stay for the Festival after the race. The plan was to take a cab back to my hotel room but many streets were still closed in and around the hotel due to the race. So the cab driver dropped me off 4 blocks from hotel. Along the way, I encouterd a diner and treated myself to a nice reward and treat!
I am not even upset at my slower time and pace. I'm proud that I made the decision to Just Do It & Run this race. There's nothing like meeting up with good friends and sharing great moments. I do believe I'm off to a great start this year!
